Sometimes in life, we experience various aches and pains that we can’t quite describe, or understand where they’ve come from, and why. It’s as if we go to bed feeling relatively fine, yet the next morning we wake up in a great deal of pain and discomfort. Without question, one of the most painful, yet commonly affected areas of the human body is the back, and as anybody who has suffered with back issues will tell you, eating a good diet, taking vitamins and minerals, resting it, ignoring it, and hoping it will go away is most certainly not the answer.
People deal with back pain and back issues in a number of different ways. Some people rely on anti-inflammatory drugs which is unhealthy over a prolonged period of time, others try stretching and hot and cold therapy, and others try various massage techniques. When it comes to back pain, massage is by far one of the most effective treatments out there, specially remedial massage, which is what we’ll be focusing on right now.
What is remedial massage and how does it work? – Remedial massage is a form of holistic massage therapy that actually benefits the entire body, not just one particular area. Remedial massage therapists will be highly knowledgeable in physiology, anatomy, swedish massage, pathology, hot and cold therapy, sports therapy, and various other connected fields.

The massage itself is very much hands on as it gently massages and stimulates muscle tissue in the body. The tissues, tendons, muscles, and ligaments in the body are massaged by the therapist, which helps to greatly relieve chronic tension within the muscles, via deep and direct pressure which is applied across muscle fibres, rather than along them. This in turn helps to relax muscle tissue, break up scar tissue, improve circulation, relieve pressure, and promote increased repair of the tissues by speeding up the healing process.
Massage therapists are able to trace the source of injury or pain to a specific area of the body, in this case the back, and then use these special techniques and processes to help treat the affected area. Note that therapeutic massage therapy by itself is good enough in alleviating body pain, it also works well hand in hand with physiotherapy, acupancture, osteopathy and chiropractic.
So, what are some of the main benefits of remedial massage? – There are a number of various benefits of remedial massage, and not just for when it comes to back pain either, some of the more prominent benefits include:
Increased lymphatic flow
Reduced pain and swelling
Reduced tension within the muscles
Improved muscle tone
The breaking down of scar tissue
A stronger immunity to similar injuries/pains
Increased energy levels as a result of an increase in circulation and oxygen transportation
